Opening Full Time 40 hours Grade 056 Environmental Health & Safety Schedule 8 AM-5 PMResponsibilitiesGENERAL PURPOSE:Manages the University's safety programs related to ionizing radiation; serves as the Radiation Safety Officer of the University and supervises a staff of professional, technical and clerical employees.JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages the University's safety programs related to ionizing radiation, serves as the Radiation Safety Officer of the University and supervises a staff of professional and clerical employees. Represents the University at the operating level in dealing with State and Federal agencies. Applies for permits and licenses on behalf of the University programs in medical applications of radiation on humans and in the research programs using radiation.
- Reviews proposed regulations on behalf of the University. Comments on proposed regulations and provides input to outside agencies on regulations that would impact University operations. Evaluates, plans and implements programs that improve present practices, save money, or meet new regulations. Certifies the design of new radiation facilities, the results of calibrations and bioassays, and other reports which require the signature of a person certified by the American Board of Health Physics.
- Maintains day to day responsibility for operation of University's radioactive materials program. Approves the use of radioactive material by faculty, staff and students. Maintains the authority to withdraw approval when the radiological safety of employees, visitors, or the community is threatened. Conducts training sessions and provides consultation to faculty, staff and students in the safe use of radioactive material. Evaluates and advises on the need for personal protective equipment and personal monitoring for the safety of individuals, for the legal protection of the University and for compliance with State and Federal regulations. Determines safe and cost-effective methods of disposal of radioactive wastes. Negotiates contracts with waste brokers and keeps abreast of latest regulations that affect the disposal methods. Develops procedures for collection, packing and reducing volume of waste as needs change.
- Evaluates exposures to and doses from ionizing radiation to determine possibility of excessive levels. Provides guidance to Physicians in possible medical treatment for overexposure. Advises on decontamination of individuals and is the principal authority in charge of such operations. Calculates dose from diagnostic and therapeutic X-ray exposures and furnishes information to Physicians for use in genetic counseling management.
- Serves as a member of the Radiation Safety Committee and the Committee on Human Use of Radioactive Material, and provides professional advice in formulating University policy with regard to radiation. Chairs the Quality Assurance (QA) Committee in medical applications of X-rays and provides direction to the QA program. Acts as Ex-officio member of the Health Physics Advisory Committee.
